Program Description

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program in construction engineering and management is essentially a course-based program. The program is uniquely designed to advance the knowledge and improve the construction management know-how of students via sets of core courses and electives that cater for students' diverse interests in project management, cost planning and control, construction methods and field operations, and labor relations and contract administration.

Local/ International Partners

Local partners include lead contractors, consultants, and government organizations, including the Egyptian Ministries of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development, Transportation, Electricity and Energy, Petroleum, and Communication and Information Technology. International partners include a group of world renowned professors from well recognized universities in Canada, USA and Europe.

Who should attend/Target Market

Architects and engineers who either work in the construction industry or plan to have a career in this vibrant industry, with a prime focus on management of engineering, procurement and construction projects.

Program Outcomes

Students will learn methods and techniques that are essential to efficient management of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects. After graduation the students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Manage projects: including project delivery systems, time, cost and quality management.
  • Plan and control project costs: including cost estimating, risk analysis, contingency development and management, cost control and progress reporting, value engineering.
  • Master the selection of construction equipment and methods: including characteristics of commonly used construction equipment, and of computer simulation and algorithmic methods for optimized selection of construction methods and equipment fleets.
  • Handle labor relations and contract administration in construction: including types of construction contracts, construction law and related legislations, labor law, business practices, safety, construction claims and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

Faculty

NU faculty members teaching in the Construction Engineering and Management program have all received their Ph.D. degrees from Canada and USA. They are active researchers with strong academic records and diverse industry experience in the private and public sectors of the construction industry. In addition, a number of internationally recognized professors from leading universities in Canada, USA, and Europe will teach in the program and will actively participate in collaborative research projects.

Curriculum

The M.Eng. program is a course-based program that requires 36 credit hours of course work. Students are required to complete the program core courses (project management, construction methods, cost estimating, engineering economics, decision analysis and project planning and control) and satisfy the total credit requirements through a set of electives. Elective courses are carefully structured to cater for students' diverse interests in management at corporate level, construction field operations, project execution and management and asset management of civil infrastructure systems. The electives, also, allow students to register for selected courses from the EMBA, MOT and ITS programs.
